Australotitan cooperensis

Australotitan is a large sauropod that lived around 95 million years ago in what is now Australia. I wanted to make sure my dinosaur was as scientifically accurate as possible, so I contacted palaeontologist Pasha van Bijlert. It was really cool to get his insights and he was able to provide me with the most recent references, so I feel like my final product turned out very nicely.

This is the render I liked most! I created some other test renders, but I feel like this image conveys my work the best.

The skeleton was really nothing special, as it comprised mostly of bones I had lying around or simple placeholders I modelled.

I wanted to really focus on my understanding of the musculature, as I have been told that my dinosaur musculatures tend to look a bit too mammalian. I am very happy with the legs, as I feel like I improved a lot compared to what I had created before.

I ended up making the neck a lot more fat than what you see here, which helped me achieve a very modern look of a sauropod.

I have created a procedural material that allows me to very quickly get very nice results when I texture paint, so I was able to create some quick studies before commiting to my final color scheme.

Most of my time working on Australotitan ended up in the iterations of the skin patterning.

At some point I unfortunately lost my pacing as I dove a bit too deep in the texture painting stage, however, it did feel like a very educational time and I am very happy with the final result.

The hardest part of this project was the massive size of Australotitan, as I had never created scales and pebbles on such a large animal. Funnily enough, my computer also had problems adapting to the scale: I ended up with three different meshes.
